In connection to Korsør’s 600th anniversary as a market town, and its long history as a maritime port, the exhibition Pelagic Perspectives presents works by six artists, focusing on ecology, water, and the sea. Given the impacts of climate change, these ocean-related themes are particularly relevant to Korsør, where rising sea levels have already led to the building of concrete barriers to protect the city center from flooding.
Artists: Gry Bagøien (DK), Rune Bering (DK), Alessandra Carosi (IT), Isabel Berglund (DK), Karen Land Hansen (DK), and Ida Retz Wessberg (DK)
Curators: Cila Brosius (DK/DE/US) and Tijana Miškoviç (DK/Ex-YU)
The term ‘pelagic’ refers to the open sea, describing organisms—particularly plankton and fish—that live in the largely unexplored waters of the ocean. The six artists work with different media, each taking their own approach to the sea as a concept, theme, and motif.
The artists attempt to grasp aspects of the sea that are not immediately visible or perceptible, yet serve as an integral part of the huge bodies of water between the shore and the seabed. The exhibition, thus, invites reflection on the vast pelagic universe—a realm still less explored than outer space.
OPENING: Saturday, June 21, from 13:00 - 16:00
